Synopsis

INTEREST. The shooting of egrets in Africa for their feathers.

Main title (1). A European, in tropical attire, and two African guides crawl through bushland (15). "A colony of egrets" (20). Panning shots of trees with colonies of egrets (120). Flocks of egrets land and take off on a plain (160). The egrets in trees (174). "Some good shots" (179). The European takes aim and shoots three times. The birds are disturbed and fly about. The European and two guides rush to the tree to collect the dead egrets (214). Closer view of the men emerging carrying the bag; they set down the dead egrets. The Africans attach the egrets to sticks and carry them over their shoulders (255). "Removing and preparing the feathers" (262). Two Europeans, seated on a boat, pluck the special feathers from the birds (282). "Egrets are sought for the sake of their feathers, only fifteen to twenty of which are of great value. The value of these special feathers will reach to as much as £120 per lb" (309). Closer view of dead egret as hand splays out the special feathers then plucks them (333). "Every year, ladies, thousands of these pretty birds are massacred to adorn your hats" (344). A hand holds up a set of feathers (353ft).
