SAFARI IN EAST AFRICA (PART 4)

This film is held by the BFI (ID: 457933).

Synopsis

AMATEUR EXPEDITION film made by Glen Kidston and set in East Africa showing members of a safari, a rhinoceros, lions and giraffes.

CS of Glen Kidston wearing a tall, pale homburg style hat and a white jacket. He talks to the camera and drags on a cigarette (17). Sequence of shots showing various members of a safari, camped in the bush, eating and drinking. They load guns, wear safari clothes and pith helmets (44). Two female members of the safari walk up a bank towards the camera. They wear stylish safari clothes and one carries a small guage moving camera (50). Men drinking tea and gathered around the camp (101). LS of cars passing through the bush, struggling on the rough terrain (no. plate B9189 can be seen) (138). Masai warriors (?) climb aboard vehicles (no. plate B9560 can be seen) with spears and shields (153).

LSs of a rhinoceros running on a grassy plain, approaching and retreating (shaky telephoto camera work) (202). Telephoto LSs of a pack of lions around a tree (shaky and of poor focus) (291). MLS of lions pulling on a gazelle carcass that is roped and attached to the back of vehicle (the camera's pov). The rope breaks free and the lions run with the carcass. Telephoto LSs of the lions (368). Shaky camera work, TRA Ss of lions and jump cuts (385). LSs of the lions. The carcass sits in the foreground. The lions take the bait and pull on the rope (442). Shaky TRA LS of a lion. LSs of lions around the tree, shading (593). LSs of giraffes, motionless on a grassy plain (618ft).

Notes: This film contains similar material to another Kidston film, A Safari in East Africa (Part 3), mainly the sequence showing the lions tussling with the carcass. Part 3 contains sharper footage and subtitles, a more 'edited' film.

The opening shot has an appearance altogether different from the rest of the film, perhaps shot elsewhere at a different time, maybe making up for Glen Kidston's absence from the rest of the film (?).
