Synopsis

INTEREST. The ruins of Zimbabwe. Close-up of African native, shot of a native beating a drum as commentary states that many natives have remained as primitive as when the white man first found them (61-103). Extract from the silent feature film '"King Solomon's Mines"' [Africa Film Productions, 1919] showing the Queen of Sheba's visit to Solomon, suggesting a connection between Solomon's mines and Zimbabwe (185). Shots of the ruins of Zimbabwe (220), African natives walking among the ruins (288). Shots of the elliptical temple, the acropolis, a white man walking among the ruins, natives walking along a narrow lane (357). CU of the stones showing how the walls were built without cement or other binding matter (431). African hut of straw and sticks shown, suggesting that Zimbabwe was not built by African natives (451). Shot of the western extremity of the temple's exterior wall which is decorated with granite monoliths. Commentary explains that the original builders are thought to be sunworshippers (494). CUs of a carved bird and phallic enblems found by early investigators (516). Shots of the conical tower at the southern end (553). [End of pink tinting, rest of film tinted blue]. Scenic night shots of the temple ruins. The explorer imagines what the past must have been like - reconstruction scene of priests entering the temple ruins, a sacrifice is prepared, camel riders across the desert, further extract from "King Solomon's Mines" of dancers performing at the court of Solomon (700). The explorer's reverie is disturbed by the trees rustling in the breeze (712). Final shots of the ruins and CU of an African native (780 ft).
