Synopsis

INSTRUCTIONAL. The manufacture of rope at Howrah.

Main title (3). Indians unload bales of hemp from a barge on the river (38). Unpacking the hemp and laying it down in thick strands (43-60). Feeding the strands into a machine (64-86). The strands are collected at the other end of the machine (107). The strands are fed into another machine (124). In a large covered shed with large spinning wheels at one end, men spin material onto the wheels (166). Large balls of coir are rolled up (180). CS of a woman winding two pieces of coir together (209). Large balls of coir being rolled (213). Large lengths of rope are fed into a contraption as it is pulled along; a larger rope appears out of the back of the machine as the ropes are knitted together (272). Indians carry the large rope outside and carry it to a barge where it is loaded into the barge (345ft). Incomplete.
