Synopsis

ACTAULITY. Scenes in Hastings, inlcuding Empire Day celebrations.

No main title. Open air service at Hastings (?) in a park. A bandstand or stage. The Union Flag is unfurled (12). Boys Brigade and boy scouts are all visible as are a large troop of fire brigade members. People dressed in Edwardian Sunday-best clothing stroll while singer/s are conducted. Pan from rear of crowd (117). Sea plane/bi-plane on a beach. It is seen landing, dropping off a woman, turning and taking off (201). Girls in numbered bathing costumes doing exercises on a beach (211). Fisherman relaxing on the beach by their huts and boats (232). Fisherman landing a catch on a beach from a beached trawler marked RX1-- (254). A large pile of fish on the beach is added to (264). A procession of carnival floats (depicting historical tableaux) passes through narrow streets. Children with garlands, etc. (395). People, mainly women, buying goods from an old female street vendor. it is unclear what she is selling but the buys smells the goods (411). Boating scenes possibly from a regatta, includes rowing and a number of motorboats (450). "CELEBRATING EMPIRE DAY. DRUM-HEAD SERVICE IN ALEXANDRA PARK." The procession of boys and men through a wide street, followed by fire-brigade members, a band, postmen, Boys Brigade, scouts, sea scouts, sailors and soldiers (606). Entering the park (as seen in the opening sequence) (625ft).

Note: The last item, from 450ft, should appear at the beginning of the film, hence the title may be CELEBRATING EMPIRE DAY..... The carnival processes down All Saints Street at what is known to have been the location of the film studio of local illustrator and filmmaker Harry Furniss, who very likely therefore made the film.
