Synopsis

Short film with a recruiting aim stressing the importance of the technical grades in the Royal Navy.

The role of the technician in the modern navy is stressed, along with illustrations of various areas: command and control, weapons, servicing turbines (County Class destroyer), radar. Training establishments, such as HMS Caledonia, are all over Britain. Engine room artificer training: mock boiler room, engines surveyed and studied, use of tools, building a lathe. Electrical artificer: training in weapons systems, computers, radios etc. Benefits of being an artificer: good promotion prospects, graduation to being top technicians, good sporting facilities (including rugby, canoeing, skiing in Cairngorms). Life on the base - bar billiards, darts etc. The artificer at work: scenes onboard HMS Euryalus. There then follows a long sequence (narrated by Johnny Morris) illustrating shore leave in Hong Kong, with scenes of the markets, the Sun Palace floating restaurant, the Tiger Balm Gardens. Return to ship for further scenes of life and work. Concluding sequence involves the rescue of a stricken yacht - engine room artificers help by providing extra revs to ship's turbines. Importance of artificers stressed again - with them, the Navy will always be prepared.
