REPORT FROM PORT SAID

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: COI 762).

Synopsis

Documentary film of the Anglo-French intervention in and around Suez and Port Said in November 1956.

"At the Mediterranean head of the Suez Canal is the town of Port Said. It was the scene of British and French action in early November 1956. This report, which was filmed in Port Said between 4th and 28th November 1956, is concerned with recounting the course of the action and the care that was taken to minimise casualties among civilians and cause damage to property." The film shows: a message being broadcast every five minutes urging people to move to the west of the city and keep off the streets; the first step of the assault being launched from Port Said airfield; capture of the airfield and the waterworks; the Middle East correspondent of News Chronicle, Geoffrey Thompson, giving an eyewitness account of the action; evidence of the precision attacking by air force support planes; the main areas of damage, indicating that the most serious damage was done by Egypt herself; British salvage experts going to work as soon as the action was over, and the Senior Civil Affairs Officer in Port Said talking. "This film hopes to disgrace Egyptian allegations of mass destruction in Port Said."
