20TH DIVISION BRIDGEHEAD OVER IRRAWADDY (14/2/1945)

Synopsis
20th Indian Division formed a bridgehead over the River Irrawaddy, crossing at Myinmu, Burma, on the night of 12 February 1945 and reinforced it over the following few days.
The bridgehead was consolidated over the next two days, despite Japanese counter attacks. The Irrawaddy was crossed at the village of Satpangon. B Company of 4th Battalion 10th Gurkha Rifles advance up the beach and RAF Hawker Hurricane fighter-bombers line up to dive bomb. D Troop 290th Anti-Tank Battery set up mortars to fire on the Japanese strong points.
Notes
These events form part of XXXIII Corps' crossing of the Irrawaddy before the advance on Mandalay. 19th Indian Division and 20th Indian Division were to cross first, with 2nd British Division crossing after and between them. 20th Division's crossing was led by 100th Brigade, in turn led by 2nd Battalion Border Regiment and 14th Battalion 13th Frontier Force Rifles, at 11pm on 12 February 1945.
