LIEUTENANT-GENERAL SLIM VISITS MEIKTILA (2/4/1945)

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 138).

Synopsis

Lieutenant-General William Slim, commander of 14th Army, arrives at Meiktila, Burma, and holds a conference with other senior civil and military figures.

Slim steps into a small motor boat to cross Lake Meiktila; he carries an M1 Carbine slung over his shoulder. Slim addresses British and Indian troops at 17th Indian Division HQ. Two Burmese civil officials named on the dopesheet as U Than Tin OBE (Finance Minister) and U Aung Gyaw (District Commissioner for Meiktila until the Japanese occupation). Close-ups of the two Burmese officials, apparently sharing a joke with a senior British officer.

Notes

The dopesheet of JFU 137 also names Major-General Eric Mansergh (commander 5th Indian Division) and Major-General David 'Punch' Cowan (commander 17th Indian Division) as having been present at this meeting.

This meeting also covered by Sergeant Higgins. See related items.
