MILITARY POLICE ACTIVITIES IN CALCUTTA (1944 (?))

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 162).

Synopsis

Edited footage showing joint American and British military police activities in Calcutta, India.

City scene showing a stationary tram and a herd of goats being driven across a road. Military traffic on the road. A civilian motor car, registration BLT 237 and probably a private taxi, pulls up in front of camera. A bullock cart carrying timber is driven across shot; a tram behind displays its destination as 'Kidderpore' a district of central-west Calcutta. A column of military lorries; a rickshaw passes in the opposite direction. A number of sacred cows, lounging in the middle of the road, appear to be startled by traffic. A civilian lorry passes. City trams; one carries a hoarding for Kamalalaya Limited. Mobile shot from a moving jeep; a number of Indian civilians dash out of the way. A number of rickshaws and civilians carrying goods on their heads. Interior footage; a civilian man sits at the head of a table. On his right are two American servicemen and the man nearest the civilian has an 'MP' (military police) armband. On the civilian's left sits a British serviceman, probably an officer, and a British civilian woman who appears to be taking minutes. Close-up pans from the American military policeman (wearing the rank insignia of a major and a chain lanyard from his left shoulder) to the civilian to the British man (wearing a metal shoulder title with a King's crown above but unfortunately the title is not legible). Exterior footage; a sign reads 'All motor vehicles drive very carefully - speed limit 20mph'. On a parade ground a group of 28 military policemen are formed up. They suddenly break formation and run to a line of parked lorries. Another line of policemen mount Triumph motorcycles and ride away, one by one, starting from the furthest away from camera. A sign on a building reads 'Headquarters Military Police Calcutta'. A white-painted jeep, with two American MPs aboard, pulls up. The man in passenger seat gets out and gets into another jeep parked in front while two British men, one in MP uniform and another in a white uniform and pith helmet (Bengal police?), leave the building and get into the white jeep. The white jeep drives along a (residential?) street before parking up. Shot of a set of traffic lights. Civilian motor cars stop at the lights but a military Chevrolet CMP lorry sweeps past them. Shot of speedometer with needle rising past 40mph. The lorry passes the parked jeep; the policeman points out the lorry to the driver who sets off in pursuit. The jeep pulls alongside and the lorry pulls over. The (very tall) policeman gets out and speaks to the (much shorter) driver. Change of location; a civilian lies in the road in front of a Chevrolet lorry. The driver, wearing a Scottish Glengarry cap, gets out and gestures to an Indian civilian. The civilian runs off and uses a telephone. Shot of a telegraph pole; seconds later the white police jeep arrives followed by an ambulance. The casualty is put on a stretcher and put aboard the ambulance, while the policeman talks to the driver. View of the jeep driving away from camera starting from an extreme close-up of the jeep's spare tyre.

Notes

No dopesheet for this film so details as to location, date, unit, etc are unclear. However this is clearly an edited film and close-ups and interior footage strongly suggest the use of sound. The Museum's copy however is mute; the soundtrack may have been lost before preservation, or the production abandoned before it was recorded.
