FIRING OF 7.2-INCH HOWITZERS (10/4/1945)

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 166).

Synopsis

At Yindaw, Burma, 7.2-inch howitzers of 8th Medium Regiment, Royal Artillery, are seen firing on Japanese positions.

Series of medium close-ups showing gunners loading a shell into the breech of a 7.2-inch howitzer. The breech is closed. Sights are set. The gun is fired and the entire weapon and carriage recoils against ramps. The sights are reset and the ramps repositioned.

Notes

Dopesheet gives the range of the gun as up to 17,000 yards, and the weight of shell as 204lbs. Also describes shots of shells being fused, but these do not appear in the viewing copy.

8th Medium Regiment formed part of the corps artillery of IV Indian Corps. Likely that they are firing in support of a 17th Indian Division envelopment against the town of Pyawbwe on the Meiktila-Rangoon road.
