A wooden hut burning with 'Jind' in the foreground. Shermans in smoke. Soldiers running from point to point. A soldier limping. A Sherman named 'Fatehgarh' with a Japanese corpse lying in the foreground and infantry crouching nearby. A wounded Gurkha carried away on a stretcher.

Notes

Jind is an area of Punjab province. Fatehgarh is in Uttar Pradesh, and is currently the home of the Rajput Regiment.

Meiktila was a major battle in which IV Corps sought to destroy a large Japanese garrison and secure a number of key strategic airfields. Meiktila also stood at the head of the main road to Rangoon. The action at Yewe is not mentioned specifically in either General Slim's memoir, or in the official history, but forms part of the consolidation of Meiktila and the attack on Pyawbwe, further south on the Rangoon road. For film of a similar action at Okpo, see related items.

The IWM's Photograph Archive contains a number of still photographs of the action at Yewe. Photograph captions also name the 4th Battalion 4th Bombay Grenadiers as having participated.
