BOMB DAMAGE ON RAMREE ISLAND (2/1945 (ca))

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 234).

Synopsis

Landings are made on beaches at Ramree Island with survey shots of damaged and destroyed buildings on the island.

A Chevrolet CMP lorry tows an Ordnance QF 25-pounder field gun up a beach, probably on Ramree Island off Burma's Arakan coast. Ships and landing craft can be seen in the background. A large, bomb-damaged and roofless concrete building, with men digging in nearby. A signaller huddles in a slit trench with his wireless set; camera tilts up to show a small red cross flag and a number of men wearing red cross armbands or carrying folded stretchers, so probably a first aid post or similar. A number of motorcycles are parked nearby. Looking into a building; a number of men are inside but it is not clear what they are doing. Shots of damaged buildings. Men at work clearing debris. Indian troops (washing?) in a ditch. Rather dark footage of men drawing water from a well with a large and apparently intact building behind.

Notes

No dopesheet survives for this film so details as to location, date, unit, etc are unclear. The identification of Ramree is based on the appearance of the beach and the large concrete building.
