Synopsis

Japanese envoys, led by Lieutenant-General Takazo Numata (Chief of Staff, Southern Army) and Rear Admiral Kaigye Chudo (Deputy Chief of Staff) sign a preliminary treaty at Government House, Rangoon, Burma.

Japanese envoys enter the hall at Government House. Lieutenant-General Browning, Chief of Staff to the Supreme Allied Commander Lord Louis Mountbatten enters and takes his seat. The instrument is signed and the Japanese delegation leaves the hall. Pan across the Allied delegation. Browning addresses the assembled members of the press.

Notes

The agreement signed here was a preliminary step to facilitate the Allied occupation of Japanese-held territory in Burma and elsewhere in South East Asia, following an unconditional Japanese surrender on 15 August.
