Notes

The Japanese had surrendered throughout South East Asia on the previous day at Singapore and so this ceremony was something of a formality.

The Victoria Institution is an English boys school in Kuala Lumpur and was opened in 1893. It currently has a student body of around 1200 and during the war was the site firstly of a Japanese administrative centre, later the surrender seen in this film, and finally (with the building being used as HQ Malaya Command) a ceremonial surrender of swords by Japanese officers in February 1946. See related items.

The MPAJA was a mostly ethnic Chinese resistance group which, originating from men of the Malayan Communist Party, mounted a continuous low-level insurgency against the Japanese occupation from camps deep in the jungle. They were assisted by personnel of the Special Operations Executive's Force 136. Some of the MPAJA would reform as the Malayan National Liberation Army and fight in the Malayan Emergency from 1948-1960.
