VIEWS FROM GOVERNMENT HOUSE, RANGOON: PARADE BEFORE HANDOVER FROM MILITARY TO CIVIL ADMINISTRATION (9/10/1945)

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 365).

Synopsis

A week before the handover of responsibility for Burma from military to civil administration, a parade is held at Government House, Rangoon, with Lord Mountbatten in attendance.

Views from the roof of Government House with troops on parade below. Mountbatten inspects troops. A British Union flag is lowered.

Notes

The Rangoon garrison evacuated in the face of advancing Japanese troops on 7 March 1942. It was not reoccupied until May 1945 and between May and 16 October 1945 was run by a British Military Administration. This film, while unremarkable visually, represents nonetheless a key phase in Burma's history and the wider history of British Asia.
