COMMANDOS ESTABLISH ANTI-PIRACY POST ON LAMMA ISLAND, HONG KONG (1946-01-09)

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 465).

Synopsis

A detachment of No.1 Army Commando lands on Lamma Island, a few miles from Hong Kong Island, to establish an anti-piracy post.

View from a Royal Navy Landing Craft Assault (LCA) approaching a beach on Lamma Island; the craft passes local Chinese boats. Local civilians gather on the beach to watch with a fast pan to commandos on the beach. Unloading the landing craft with people crowding around. More unloading; a Chinese man ('pathetically willing and eager' - from the cameraman's dopesheet) lends a hand. Medium close-up of a commando passing boxes; one valuable box is marked 'Teacher's Highland Cream Whisky'. Another contains tinned potatoes. Lieutenant Wassel, commander of the commando detachment, confers with a Chinese interpreter. Close-up of a letter being translated for Wassel. Chinese children. Close-up and pan of children. A commando 'fraternising' with a Chinese kid wearing a sailor's hat; the commando appears to offer the kid a cigarette which it refuses, and the commando grins at the camera. A Chinese girl carrying a younger sibling (?) piggyback. Stores are carried off towards a hill. Commando with a case on his shoulder. Soldiers and civilians pass camera carrying stores; one small child carries a small case. A snake of people making their way up a hillside. Arriving at a small single-storey building which is to serve as the detachment's base; one commando appears to be carrying a vital piece of equipment (a dartboard). A signaller with a wireless set. Closer shot of the signaller, with a child staring intently at the camera, and the building behind. View from the building looking towards the signaller and local people in between. Panning view of the countryside with the child sitting on a rock, the signaller, local people, and troops.
