EXECUTION OF JAPANESE WAR CRIMINALS AT CHANGI JAIL SINGAPORE

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 537).

Synopsis

Footage shot with live sound at Changi Jail, Singapore, showing three convicted Japanese war criminals being hanged.

Three shots, all taken from a high point overlooking the gallows in the courtyard of Changi jail, as each prisoner is led out and hanged in the following order: Lieutenant Nakamura, Sergeant-Major Iijima (Eishima on the dopesheet) and Captain Komai. The live sound captures the sound of a bell tolling the hour (9:00am) and some indecipherable conversation between members of the execution party, with some laughter, footsteps as the condemned are led to the gallows, and the crash of the trapdoor opening.

Notes

Additional coverage by Captain Walter and Major Evans. See related items.

Nakamura was executed for having beheaded an Indian soldier, Sepoy Mohammed Shafi. Some of his trial can be seen in the films referenced below. Iijima and Komai were executed for beating to death two British prisoners of war at Kanburi, Thailand, in 1943. See Lomax reference below.

The Imperial War Museum's Sound Archive holds interviews with two of the cameramen who filmed these executions. See reference below.
