MANDALAY - AIR RESUPPLY AND SHELLING (16/3/1945)

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 72).

Synopsis

As the British Army make their way into Mandalay, Burma, they are re-supplied by air drops from Douglas Dakotas and a Royal Artillery Observation Post is set up on Mandalay Hill.

A Douglas Dakota flies low over Mandalay and drops four supply crates with parachutes attached. Several aircraft make passes and drop more supplies. Fort Dufferin, used by the Japanese as a supply depot, is still holding out against the 19th Indian Division attacks. The watchtowers around the walls are ablaze after artillery shelling and smoke columns climb into the sky. An artillery observation post watches the fort burn; they use a range finder to assist the artillery crews.

Notes

Mandalay, Burma's second city, was an objective of great importance due to its prestige value and logistical connections, and was also the site of a large Japanese supply dump.

Operations for the capture of Mandalay were extensively covered by other British Army cameramen. See related items.
