MANDALAY AND SUPREMO'S VISIT (22/3/1945)

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 78).

Synopsis

Scenes of the devastation in Mandalay, Burma, are revealed as the Supreme Allied Commander Lord Louis Mountbatten visits Mandalay Hill and Fort Dufferin and meets the soldiers who helped with the capture of the city from the Japanese.

The ruins of Mandalay show the damage done by British artillery and air strikes. A railway line has been bombed and rolling stock is burnt out and scattered across the tracks. A sign reads "Mandalay Junction". Lord Mountbatten gets out of a jeep and meets Major-General T W Rees and Air Chief Marshal Park, Allied Air Commander, South East Asia. The group walk past trucks then address a large group of soldiers of 150th Regiment Royal Armoured Corps. The officers walk up the covered steps on Mandalay Hill. Major-General Rees and Lord Mountbatten look at a map as Rees explains how the battle for Mandalay and Fort Dufferin unfolded. Rees points out features. An explosion goes off on the fort wall and a plume of smoke rises.
