Synopsis

Signallers of the 9th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment lay a line across the Shweli River, Burma from Battalion HQ at Kota to a forward company who were in contact with the Japanese.

Cable laying carried out with the aid of a boat, while men follow across the river on foot attaching weights to sink the cable to the river bed.

Notes

9th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment was part of 72nd Brigade, 36th Division. At this point 36th Division (commanded by Major-General F W Festing) was part of Northern Combat Area Command (NCAC) under the American Lieutenant-General Daniel Sultan. NCAC was a multi-national force comprising Mars Task Force (American and Chinese) and two Chinese Armies (New First Army and New Sixth Army) in addition to 36th British Division.
