GENERAL SHOTS AFTER CONFERENCE BETWEEN 14TH ARMY COMMANDER, 4TH AND 33RD CORPS COMMANDERS AND THE VISIT OF GENERAL SLIM TO IMPHAL (9/7/1944)

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 91).

Synopsis

Officers, including Lieutenant-General Slim, from the South East Asia Command gather for a conference in the jungle near Imphal, India.

Officers leave the conference. Slim leads them up a set of rough steps cut into the hillside. Most of the officers carry long walking sticks. The officers, including Lieutenant-General Slim, Lieutenant-General Scoones IV Indian Corps commander and Lieutenant-General Stopford XXXIII Indian Corps commander stop to pose for the camera then walk off. A Douglas Dakota transport plane taxis along an airstrip. An Avro Anson taxies past. Lieutenant-General Slim gets out of the Anson and is met by Lieutenant-General Scoones. They shake hands and walk off to a staff car.

Notes

The dopesheet does not give any details as to what was discussed at this conference, but shortly before it was convened the remnants of two Japanese divisions (the 15th and 31st) had been encircled and destroyed at the village of Ukhrul in Manipur, and shortly after Slim transferred 23rd Division from IV Corps to XXXIII Corps. Likely that the discussions focused on the pursuit of the retreating Japanese towards the River Chindwin.
