Synopsis

(216A) April 1940: (item continued from MGH 1438). Trench digging instruction; training in use of rifle. Pay parade. Scenes in mess - men queue for food and drink, relax in mess hall. Parade on drill square - unidentified British officer takes salute.

(220A) May/June 1940: Youth week. Herzl's letter to Jewish youth. Maccabiah youth parade - bands, athletes, gymnastics. A youth group in a camp. Athletes parade through Tel Aviv. Constructing Beit Hadar building. Street boys (selling papers, shoeshine). Open air lessons. Exhibition "Zionist youth in Diaspora". Maccabi Hazir camp at Kiryat Ariel. (Scout-type activities). Inspirational titles. Youth march past.

(6F/second series) May/June 1945: VE Day celebrations in Jerusalem. Newspaper headline montage. Long procession through Jerusalem to the Jewish Agency building. Much more than a victory celebration, this is a demonstration demanding an end to the British controls on immigration in force since the 1939 White Paper. Hebrew banners read, in order of appearance through item, "Free immigration for Jews to their Homeland"; "Immediate release of Haganah prisoners"; "Because of our blood we live" (literally "My life due to your blood"); "Now - immediate immigration"; "Down with the White Paper"; "All of the Country for the settlement of the people"; "Illegal immigrants must continue to come" (note that the Hebrew equivalent of "illegal immigrant" has positive not negative connotations). At the Agency, the crowd is addressed by I Ben-Tzvi.

Extracts from a series of newsreels produced for the Jewish audience in Palestine, 1929-1947.

Notes

Documentation/associated material: Axelrod catalogue (held in photocopy form by Film and Video Archive).

Remarks: the youth-week item - with its stress on racial unity and political strength out of physical endeavour and collective obedience - is very strongly reminiscent of such films as soldaten von morgen.
