Synopsis

(147A) July 1938: Building of the Maale Hachamisha Kibbutz (chamisha means five in Hebrew). This kibbutz was built in memory of five young Jews killed on the site during an Arab guerrilla raid; halfway on the road between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, it was designed to guard this vital artery. Mondlich singing "the Song of the Five" in Hebrew; planting forest in memory of five dead heroes (whose photos are shown). View of land of Hachamisha Settlement; settlers build houses, dig trenches, erect beacon; armed settlers on guard. Woman signaller waves flag. Settlers clear rubble, erect barbed wire fence. Reading scroll of basic principles and purpose of kibbutz, burying scroll in bottle in foundations; Hartzfield speech (Jewish Agency Planning Committee); speeches by unknown settlers. Collecting stones for defence works. Stone look-out tower.
