Synopsis

Amateur film with titles shot by Dr David Bates of the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) while serving with the British Army in Occupied Japan records mainly scenes of traditional rural life and religious festivals, but also shows the devastation at Hiroshima (April 1946), places on Shikoku (Miyajima, Kochi, Suoaki, Tokushima, Takamatsu) and signs of the British presence (HMS Cossack during firing exercise, 2nd Battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers at Imperial Plaza in Tokyo). Only medical scene is innoculation or vaccination of Major M Jackson Smyth at CRS Wadashima. Shore scenes in Singapore, Johore (from Causeway), Malayan rubber plantation, Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Bombay and Colombo on voyage home to Liverpool (16 December 1947).
