Synopsis

I. 'AVIATION NEWS.' An item highlighting new developments in the aviation industry. In the United States, A man leaves a detached house carrying golf clubs and climbs into a single-seat Piasecki P-V2 helicopter, the newest product of PV Engineering Forum Inc based at Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania. Brief cockpit views are shown. The helicopter takes off from the front garden of the house, later landing at a car petrol filling station where a petrol-pump attendant cleans the windscreen of the small aircraft. The commentary states "Helicopters aren't just a stunt, they've come to stay." The commentary outlines the development in Britain of the Avro York transport aircraft, stressing its development from the famous Avro Lancaster bomber. An Avro York runs up its Rolls-Royce Merlin 24 engines. the aircraft is shown in a camouflage paint scheme, but bearing a civil registration (G-AGJA). Willys MB 4x4 Jeeps are driven up a loading ramp and into the cargo hold of an Avro York transport. Avro York G-AGJA takes off, retracting its undercarriage into the inboard engine nacelles.

II. 'MIDDLE EAST NEWS.' Delegates from the Middle East Agricultural Conference visit the estates of King Farouk at Inshass. Delegates enjoy the King's hospitality at luncheon, seated in the open at long rows of tables. Close up footage of various of the visiting delegates follows including Mr Ofzal Hussein from India, Mustafa Nosrat Bey the Egyptian Minister for Agriculture and Hussein Iman Bey, the Egyptian Under Secretary of State for Agriculture. A gathering of conference delegates admire horses from the King's stud farm. The commentary states that the main outcome of the Agricultural Conference was the proposal to set up a Council of Agriculture to review problems associated with new agricultural developments in the Middle East. The delegates later visit the farm of Iman Bey and are shown inspecting chicken pens and talking to land workers. Osman Moharram Pasha, Egyptian Minister of Public Works, talks to delegates about problems of irrigation. Elsewhere, a large crowd of spectators watch a boxing tournament at the El Alamein Club in Cairo. Footage of various British/United States boxing matches follow with the commentary being supplied from the ringside by United States and British service commentators.

III. 'WAR NEWS.' United States President Franklin Delano Roosevelt visits the George Cross Island of Malta. A Willys MB 4x4 Jeep drives President Roosevelt and Field Marshal Viscount John S S P V Gort (Governor of Malta) past a Royal Navy (RN) guard of honour. Army and RN troops are drawn up on a parade ground as President Roosevelt makes the presentation of a scroll of honour to Lord Gort as a symbol of American esteem for Malta's invincible garrison and people. RN ratings brush snow from the decks of an unidentified destroyer anchored at Scapa Flow as they commentary outlines events leading to the sinking of the German battleship KM Scharnhorst at North Cape by elements of the British Home Fleet. Stock shots show a Merchant convoy at sea. Brief footage shows HMS Norfolk at sea and RN Vice-Admiral Robert L Burnett looking through binoculars. HMS Duke of York in heavy seas, fires broadside salvoes from its 14-in guns. Blindfolded German Kriegsmarine prisoners disembark from an RN harbour vessel at Scapa Flow after the loss of KM Scharnhorst (cf NMV 761/2). RN gun crews pose for photographs in anti-flash hoods near the quadruple heavy gun turret of an unidentified RN ship (most probably HMS Duke of York).
