Synopsis

Victory Over Japan.

I. 'VICTORY OVER JAPAN.' A retrospective victory issue summarising the war against Japan. Emperor Hirohito of Japan inspects troops of an armoured unit at a New Year's parade (cf WPN 45). Stock shot footage shows the aftermath of a Japanese bombing raid on an unidentified Chinese airfield. Chinese firefighters attempt to fight a blaze caused by the bombing. Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek addresses Chinese Nationalist troops from a raised podium. Chinese Nationalist troops fire a Vickers .303-inch heavy machine gun and a Kulomet vz 30 7.92mm light machine gun from the cover of rubble. Stock shot footage shows United States Navy (USN) vessels burning at their moorings in Pearl Harbor (Oahu). President Franklin Delano Roosevelt addresses Congress following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. A map illustrates the extent of the Japanese advance. Oil storage tanks burn on Singapore Island. A flyer for the Malaya Tribune newspaper reads "Malaya At War." Australian troops fire an Ordnance QF 25-pounder howitzer at high elevation in New Guinea. A Japanese Type 95 tank burns by a roadside. Stock shot footage shows Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Bristol Beaufighter aircraft attacking Japanese merchant shipping in the Bismarck Sea (cf WPN 107). President Roosevelt, General and Madame Chiang Kai-shek and Winston Churchill pose for photographs at Mena near Cairo following the conclusion of the Pacific Conference (cf WPN 136). General Douglas MacArthur is shown on the deck of an unidentified United States Navy (USN) warship. British infantry move through the Burmese jungle armed with Lee-Enfield Mk III .303-inch rifles and Bren .303-inch light machine guns. US soft-skinned vehicles drive along the newly linked Ledo Road-Burma Road. The first supply convoy of US soft-skins arrives at Kunming in China (cf WPN 202). US infantry fire 105mm howitzers during street fighting on Luzon. The corpses of Filipino civilians executed by the Japanese lie on a Manila Street. Stock shot footage shows the US national flag being hoisted on Iwo Jima. Lord Louis Mountbatten chats to General Sir William Slim during a visit to Mandalay in Burma (cf WPN 301). A map shows the location of Okinawa. US M4 Sherman flame throwing tanks (M4 POA-CWS 75-HI flame thrower conversion ?) attack Japanese positions on Okinawa. Camera gun footage shows US aircraft attacking Japanese airfields and industrial plants with rocket projectiles. Stock shots show Benito Mussolini giving an impassioned speech from a podium and Adolf Hitler saluting. Footage of German Army (Heer) prisoners of war follow. Winston L S Churchill, Clement R Attlee, Bernard L Montgomery, and Ernest K Bevin watch a British armoured unit performing a drive-past with M24 Chaffee light tanks and White M3 half tracks towing 25-pounder guns. Stock shots show Clement R Attlee, Ernest K Bevin, Harry S Truman and Joseph Stalin at Potsdam. The item ends with the commentary stating "The forces of good have triumphed. Our whole world is free."
