Synopsis

I. 'SINGAPORE.' The official Japanese surrender in Singapore (September 12 1945). Lord Louis Mountbatten arrives by open-tourer and inspects a Royal Navy guard of honour who present arms with Lee-Enfield Mk III .303-inch rifles. Mountbatten is shown talking to a soldier from the Fifth Indian Division before entering the Singapore Municipal Buildings in anticipation of the arrival of the Japanese surrender delegation. The Japanese delegates are escorted in to the conference room. Mountbatten reads from the surrender document (mute). General Itagaki signs the document of surrender using a rubber stamp, as does Mountbatten. In front of the Municipal Buildings Mountbatten reads the order of the day and watches the hoisting of the Union flag.

II. 'FIVE POWER CONFERENCE.' Footage taken at the exterior of Lancaster House in London shows press photographers gathering. Ernest Bevin talks to the United States (US) Secretary of State, James F Byrnes. Panoramic footage shows delegates seated at the conference table. Delegates shown include Georges Bidault, Feodor Gusev, Vyacheslav M Molotov and Dr V K Wellington Koo. The commentary points out that although the conference ended without complete agreement, progress was made towards settlement of many post-war problems.

III. 'MIDDLE EAST NEWS.' The merchant ship SS Marawi arrives in Suez carrying the first eight hundred British prisoners of war recently released from Japanese captivity. A British Army brass band plays on the quayside as the ship moves towards its berthing position. General Sir B C T Paget awaits the arrival of the ship. Returnees disembark from the ship and are later shown eating in a NAAFI. Brief footage shows young children born in Japanese captivity playing on a beach and in a swimming pool. Returnee troops and civilians wave from the decks of SS Marawi as it begins the final leg of its journey back to Britain.

IV. 'ALLIED FLEET IN TOKYO BAY.' Brief footage shows devastated docks and light industrial area in the environs of Tokyo Bay. United States (US) Admiral William F Halsey (US Third Fleet) is winched aboard the decks of HMS Duke of York by jackstay transfer, where he meets Admiral Sir Bruce A F Fraser (British Pacific Fleet). A Japanese pilot is brought aboard carrying maps giving the locations of minefields in the waters of Tokyo Bay. Brief footage shows Allied prisoners of war waving from a quayside. A dockyard building has a sign that reads "Come after us". Ex-Allied prisoners of war shake hands with their rescuers. Brief interior footage shows a cramped sleeping accommodation area in an unidentified Japanese camp for Allied prisoners of war. More prisoners wave, one dances for joy. Newly released Allied prisoners of war wave from a landing craft as it reverses away from a quayside. HMS Duke of York rides at anchor in Tokyo Bay.
