Synopsis

General footage of Kashmir. Countryside / scenery .Riverside settlements Lakes, boats, European houseboatsclothes washing on river banks, street musicians / dancers performing, walking craft across river, horse riding & picnic in high alpine countryside , mountain road tunnel. The Arch at New Delhi. Captions identify each location.

Production / Donor Details: The collection was shot mainly in India between 1932 and 1942 by Austin Havelock Layard. The Layard family had held distinguished posts in Ceylon since 1803, and Mr Layard was a high ranking official in the Indian Civil Service in the Central Provences during the 1920s and 1940s, and between 1932 & 1938 was Deputy Commissioner in Delhi. In 1948 and 1949 he served in the office of the U.K. High Commission in Delhi and Calcutta.
