Synopsis

Journey from Liverpool to Takeradi, Gold Coast. Departure of Liner from the landing stage at Liverpool Docks England shot from the ship and showing the details of the landing station with the Liver Buildings in the background. Tugs assisting the ship in the river. Passengers and crew on ship's deck practising life boat drill. The ship's passengers taking their leisure on deck. Ship's crew going about their daily duties. Close passing coastal views of the island of Madeira. Arrival of ship off coast of West Africa. Freight ships at anchor inside protective harbour moles. Car being prepared for unloading from ship's deck. Harbour with dockside warehouses and railway line past factory into the interior. Exterior of Official Residence from which 2 British males dressed in pith helmets and white suites exit from the entrance into the garden grounds where small mixed group of British are gathered. Group of Africans watch others working on a large tree which has been felled across road in wooded area. Single car being transported across wide river by ferry with British passenger and African crew and other passengers. Wooden ramps being erected by small group of African workmen for vehicles to cross narrow river. Single car then drives over the completed small bridge watched by spectators. British wife with cigarette in her mouth adjusts her husband's tie before they leave for social occasion. Approach to African port seen from ship. Large rowing boats make their way out and one come alongside and has to be baled out by a member of her crew. From an unseen boat 2 British couples are hoisted onboard the liner's deck by crane in a wicker basket. The procedure is supervised by British officer who salutes his new passengers as they climb out. The 2 British ladies then mess about for the camera on the ship's deck by pretending to dance. "Can-Can". New passengers board liner up ladder from ship's longboat, which has approached from the shore. Father helps his small daughter swim in the canvas swimming pool on ship's deck. Tug nudges fright lighters towards ship's side. Coastal scenery and small craft approach ship's side. Middle-aged couple take their tea in deckchairs on ship's deck. Coastal scenery with high hills and shore dock installations. Madeira? Large flotilla of small boats lying off liner's side full of peddlers attempting to sell their goods to the ship's passengers.

Production / Donor Details: Donor's grandfather, Sir Francis Walter F Jackson was Chief Commissioner, Gold Coast (Ghana) 1934-36.
