VALE: DANCED BY THE VILLAGERS OF THE HOOD PENINSULA

This film is held by the BFI (ID: 21362).

Synopsis

ACTUALITY. Record of a dance by the natives of Papua.

Titles (1). LS of men in a line each with a drum. They dance forwards and backwards lifting the drums into the air. They seem to be led by a man in a large feathered head-dress. Three women in large skirts dance along the line of men by jumping in very small steps and very slowly. When they reach the end of the dancing line of men, the women slowly turn to face the men then turn round again. In the background the dancers are watched by a group of natives; there is a pole; and in the far distane the sea and a cape can be seen (51ft)

Note: Almost certainly filmed at the "durbar" of the Central Division tribes organised by Capt. Francis Rickman Barton at Port Moresby in 1904.

Note: Titles carry the Elge (Gaumont) trademark.
