Synopsis
INTEREST. Rice cultivation in Ceylon.
Opening scenic shots of Ceylon, commentary explains that varied crops are produced in Ceylon but the staple food of the people is rice (101). In the paddy fields, buffaloes are used to draw the ploughs. Water is splashed on the buffaloes to keep them cool (161). Shots of the paddy fields which are terraced, so that water flows down from the streams at the top (200). After ploughing, the seed is sown in the wet earth (235). The workers enjoy their leisure by gossiping together in the village (282). Views of the village (328). At harvest time, the whole village gathers for the ceremony (384). Dancers perform traditional dances (537). In the fields, the crop is reaped (659). The sheaves are spread out and the buffaloes driven over them until the grains are separated from the stalks (694). Finally, the chaff is separated from the grain (750 ft).
