Synopsis

A record of the celebrations organised for the independence of Papua New Guinea 16th September 1975.

Village life, history of the people and colonisation. A brass band. An interview with a German settler. Archive footage of missionary work and gold mining. Talks about the invasion of 1942. Archive footage. Conscription into labour battalions, interviews with conscrpits. Conscripts brought back wounded from the front. Archive footage of the surrender. Voting in the local Government councils. 1964, election of the National Assembly. 1st December 1973, Michael Somari (Chief Minister) addresses the National Assembly on defence and foreign affairs. A magistrate talking to villagers about law, village courts in session. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Papua New Guinea. Technical colleges, artists, soldiers taking blood samples to test against malaria in villages. Farming and fishing for tuna. Village women making pots. Cash crops for example coffee, co-operatives. Teaching farmers how to use buffalo. The perfomance of traditional dances.
