Synopsis

Information film about manufacture of tea by CWS. Includes footage from their plantation in Ceylon (Sri Lanka), the CWS Westhall factory and the CWS Leman Street tea warehouse. Begins with a dramatic sequence depicting a young man and his father discussing the romantic history of the tea trade. Flashback to 18th century England: the successful attempt of the East India Tea Company to get royal patronage in order to boost sales. Flashback to 1760: Dr Johnson, Boswell and Garrick discuss the merits of tea. Flashback: Victorian England. A young engaged couple, at afternoon tea with her parents, discuss the man's imminent departure for a plantation in Ceylon. Cut to documentary scenes of Ceylon landscape and prolonged sequence of street life in city (possibly Columbo) and countryside. Shots of the work and management of the tea plantation. Sequence concludes with the workers at leisure, singing and dancing. Drying and grading of tea at Westhall factory, loading onto trains. Columbo: loading onto ships. London: tea-tasting and blending. Tea is packaged and sent to Co-op stores. Acted conclusion as an older lady demonstrates to her younger friend (and the audience) how to make the perfect pot of tea which they then take to the two men from the opening sequence. Final shots of couples around Britain enjoying a cup of tea.
