Synopsis

ACTUALITY: German version of "Attack" - The Battle of New Britain: An authentic account of U.S. attacks on Japanese - held New Britain in the Pacific. The narration in German explains the strategy of attack and emphasises the thoroughness of preparation.

"R.1" Film starts with a sealed document concerning the attacks on New Britain being opened. A map gives the position of New Britain in the Pacific Islands, followed by various shots of the islands. The American troops are then shown making preparations to attack New Britain - troops driving through jungle marching with the American flag, pitching tents, cutting down trees, lorries crossing river. Natives are shown building huts. Telecommunications are set up, troops queue up for dinner. Map of projected attack on Arawe (860 ft). "R.2" The troops then practise their attack. Rifles are set up, ammunition examined and target practise goes on. Soldiers set off on carrier ships and unload into rubber dingies. General MacArthur arrives and inspects the troops. (1507 ft). "R.3" Preparations are made to attack Arawe. Soldiers clean rifles and equipment, study maps of the area and receive tablets for Malaria. The attack commences - carrier ships approach island and the soldiers land. Planes fly over and drop bombs. Shots of dead and wounded soldiers. Soldiers shown making attack on the enemy in the jungle. (2311 ft). "R.4" After more fighting the attack on Arawe is successful. The wounded are taken off the island. Christmas comes and commission is celebrated. The attack on Cape Gloucester is then planned. The attack begins - soldiers land and make their way into the jungle. Aerial shots of bombs dropping (3249 ft). "R.5" The troops attack the enemy in the jungle. A carrier ship arrives with more troops. The wounded are attended to Jank arrive and plough through the jungle. Supplies arrive. (4133 ft). "R.6" Troops continue into the jungle. Camp is set up. An enemy plane is shot down and a ship is sunk. The wounded are attended to. A burial service is held. Shots of soldiers saying the Lords Prayer. Cape Gloucester attack is successful. (5043 ft)
