Synopsis

DRAMA. Two prospectors in New Guinea, both in love with the same girl, are captured by head hunters, one escapes and betrays his friend to win the girl.

rl.1 Peter Mack and his daughter Eleanor live on a plantation in New Guinea. He lends a map to two young gold prospectors. Martin South and Stephen Mardyke. They set out and reach their objective, but are being stalked by head hunters (954 ft).

rl.2 They set up camp and start looking for gold and are successful. The head hunters attack the camp and they are overwhelmed and taken prisoner, Martin being wounded. At the native village, Hurana, a slave woman who has gained power over the chief, saves their lives by suggesting that they may be able to heal the chief, who is ill. She takes Martin to her hut and nurses him. Stephen and one of the carriers manages to escape (2110 ft).

rl.3 He allows the carrier to go ahead and hides. The warriors pursue and re-capture the carrier, they think Stephen eaten by crocodiles. Martin cures the chief with a dose of quinine. Vaika, the witch doctor, jealous of Martin's success with the chief, tries to poison him, but Martin sees him placing the poison in the cup. Stephen at last reaches the Mack's plantation and is nursed back to health. Eleanor, who loves Martin, asks for news and Stephen, who loves her himself, allows her to believe Martin dead. Martin sends a carrier off with a message to the Macks (3319 ft).

rl.4 Hurana helps Martin to escape, they elude the pursuit by canoe by submerging in the river and breathing by straws, but are eventually captured in the jungle. Martin manages to get a box of explosives from the pack he was carrying and throws it on the head hunters fire. In the resulting confusion, he and Hurana escape (4539 ft).

rl.5a With Hurana's help, they survive in the jungle. The carrier arrives with the message Martin sent and Stephen tears it up. He tells Eleanor that Martin is definitely dead and comforts her. Hurana is bitten by a snake, Martin applies a tourniquet and sucks the wound (5263 ft).

rl.5b He struggles to the Mack's plantation with the stricken girl, but she dies on arrival. Later, he questions the carrier who tells how Stephen tore the letter up and produces the pieces. Stephen leaves and Martin and Eleanor are at last united (5883 ft).
