Synopsis

INTEREST. A look at a day's activities in a Jewish colony at Deganya, Palestine.

Aerial views of Deganya, which the commentary says is a model Jewish colony. It is at the southern end of Lake Kinneret, of which several shots follow. Shots also of surrounding area, which is potentially very fertile (48). A tractor cultivates the land (63). An American combine is shown (77). People at work in the green fields, horses ploughing, raking etc. The commentary explains that 8 alfalfa crops are produced by Deganya each year. A man is cutting the crop and is then seen sharpening his sickle (100). The refugees from the ruined communities of Germany and Poland have come here to work. Shots of them tossing hay and putting it through a baler (118). 2 wagon-loads of bales of hay are drawn away by horses. The workers piling up the bales of hay (136). Some other workers feed the cows. Milk is a very important produce of Deganya and with a specially prepared diet for the cows, they have substantially increased the yield. The cows eat their food (154). A man pours milk in a churn. The churns are loaded onto a wagon to be exported (161). Another important product is the banana crop. A man rakes up the sodden earth up around the roots of the trees (175). The irrigation system is shown. A dam. A man drinks from the stream of water (188). Another activity carried out in the colony is building and a partially constructed house is shown. A man is hammering at it. Another lifts bags of cement (200). Yet another man is screwing a piece of equipment together. The commentary says that a good colonist has to be a Jack-of-all-trades (212). Fishing is also carried out here. A motorised boat is shown first. Then a shot of three men rowing a boat. They later put up a mast and sail (245). According to the commentator, the farmer has to defend his crops and there are shots of a group of volunteers in uniform. The film shows them performing various look-out duties (281). The role of women in the colony is illustrated next. We see a woman mowing a lawn, another cleans windows and a third is taking in washing from a line. Chicken breeding is also a very important task the women perform (308). Women work too, in the vineyards. A shot of one young girl eating a grape from a bunch that she has just picked (320). Another job for the women is the education of the young. Pictures of a group of unclothed children running about, playing with water and swimming in the lake (363). The business administration centre of Deganya is next shown. Man in an office with files writing and calculating. The commentary says that they also take in and train newcomers (377). A woman on a phone (379). Finally, dinner time arrives. One woman bangs a gong and another rings a bell to let the workers know. Men and women start making their way to the dining room from all directions. Shots of them seated round a table eating, drinking and chatting (434). Two men do the washing-up (440). A man switches on the radio, which a group of the colonists listen to (450). So that they do not lapse into being ignorant peasant types education is maintained for all and we see one of the typical discussion groups taking place outside. Another group reads at a table. Others laze about on the grass (471). Two men sit on a bench facing the lake (476). Their gardens are the pride of the colony and there are shots of them and a woman picking flowers (484). Shots of a young couple with a baby, walking in the gardens and playing on the lawn (499 ft).
