Synopsis

Operation Transom, Anglo-American carrier air strike on Wonokromo oil refinery and the harbour of Sourabaya in Java, 17 May, 1944

Opening sequence showing HMS Illustrious and USS Saratoga manoeuvring in close company with the cameraship, HMS Queen Elizabeth - the sequence ends with MS off the port quarter of the French battleship Richelieu. HA.MS onto the bridge of HMS Quickmatch (G.92) as she comes alongside to take on fuel. XLS to screening destroyers steaming in line ahead left to right across the horizon. Tracer is fired off against a sleeve target, which is hit and falls slowly into the sea. Multiple 2-pounder and 20mm tracer is fired offset against a target aircraft. After 4.5-inch DPs fire at low angle. Reel Two. Divine service on quarterdeck - astern of Queen Elizabeth are HMS Valiant, HMS Renown, and Richelieu. MLS off the port quarter of the French battleship. MS onto port bow of HMS Norseman (G.25), come abreast for refuelling in a choppy sea - as Norseman makes off at speed, HMS Renown is visible in the background. Two TBD Avengers pass low over Queen Elizabeth, their bomb bay doors open, during a practice attack. LA to two Dauntless SBDs as they pull out of dive-bombing attacks on cameraship. LS to four Dauntless SBDs flying past in rough V-formation. LS of HMS Renown under 'air attack'. CU of Admiral Somerville talking with Commander Haskett-Smith on quarterdeck - Valiant in background. HA.MS to crew fell in for divine service. HA.MS as Somerville steps out onto starboard bridge - taken while the aircraft were over the objective. LSs of distant aircraft of the fighter screen. MS of USS Saratoga steaming on a reciprocal course to Queen Elizabeth - the carrier's crew line the side. From the bridge Somerville and Captain Norman lead the cheering as the two ships part company. Final rear 3/4 MS of Somerville at prayer during divine service on quarterdeck.
