OPERATION HUSKY

Synopsis

I. Reel One. HA onto men larking about in swimming pool rigged on the deck of HMS Nelson. HA onto 8x 2-pounder aft on port side - crew clear away, don anti-flash and ready and train the gun. HA onto focsle as crew form up for entering Oran.

II. Onshore in Sicily. Men raise White Ensign with beneath it a pennant inscribed RNBC N3 (Royal Naval Beach Command No 3 ?) - Lieutenant Commander, RN smiles as the flag goes up. CUs of Italian prisoners smiling into the camera - some of them are prompted into giving V-signs by their cheery British captors. MS of LCA in shallows, and pan right over the invasion fleet offshore - LSIs, LST, HQ ship Hilary, and a group of LCM(3)s. LS of bomb (?) exploding amidst the fleet - stern of LST at right of frame. View of invasion fleet shot from small craft, panning onto HMS Blankney (L.30) as she steams past. LS from Hilary to cruiser HMS Orion, her bows obscured by the upper works of cameraship - in mid-screen is a L Class destroyer lying bows on with forward 4.7-inch guns trained over port beam. HA onto LCM(3) 1421 with M3 tank embarked as the craft pulls away from the cameraship. MS of Major-General Simmonds on the bridge of Hilary - he is wearing dark sun-goggles - pan to bridge wing where signal searchlight is trained round and message sent. MS of Captain Paget of the Hilary.

III. Convoy at sea. Sequence showing Major J M Robinson, a Canadian Army staff officer, transfer from destroyer HMS Wheatland (L.122) - Robinson is transferred in a chair suspended from ship's crane with straining lines to cameraship and destroyer to control his position - CUs of the destroyer show smoke dischargers either side in the bows, and crew's washing strung up to dry around base of the funnel. Transfer completed, Wheatland makes off. XLS pan over distant destroyer screen and ships of the convoy to neighbouring Glen Class LSI and thence to ship directly astern, which is flashing a signal. RN and Canadian staff study charts maps and photographs on deck of the Hilary. One crewman cobbles, watched by his friends, while another washes clothing in a bucket. Pan from nearby Glen Class LSI to LST(1) and thence over distant fleet - a US destroyer is part of the escort. LA to signal hoist on Hilary, and then pan down past Oerlikon position and out over Glen Class LSI and two LST(1)s. The convoy passes Zembra Island near Cape Bon - cameraship signals. LS pan following BPB (British Power Boat) air-sea rescue launch No 182 as she speeds amidst convoy, passing HMS Wallace (L.64) - at end of the shot a Bangor Class minesweeper (possibly HMS Stornoway) is visible in the background, frame left. LS off starboard bow of line of troop transports. HMS Blankney (L.30) steams close by cameraship - at frame left stand two soldiers, one carrying a Thompson sub-machine gun without magazine. Reel Two. Sequence showing Divine Service onboard Hilary - Captain Paget reads the lesson, and Rear-Admiral Vian and Major-General Simmonds attend. MS of Marnix Van Sint Aldegonde and LS off port bow of a second LSI. MLS and MS off the port bow as HMS Euryalus approaches at speed and CUs of the cruiser alongside for transfer of a despatch - at the very beginning of the sequence a fleet carrier is briefly visible in the background.

IV. Onboard HMS Nelson. Night firing sequence - main turrets fire, flares in the sky. Daylight - HA.MS aft to port 6-inch turrets as they fire to shore. Further night firing sequence - camera on the quarter deck as main armament fires - flares and tracer - astern of Nelson is HMS Formidable briefly illuminated by flash of her 4.5-inch guns.

V. Continuation of III. HMS Petard (G.56) of Force Z, reserve covering force, closes on cameraship Hilary to receive a despatch. Major-General Simmonds' staff confer.

VI. Reel Three. Onboard HMS Nelson. View entering Gibraltar, crowded with invasion shipping, including a Brooklyn Class cruiser, and HMS Howe and King George V of Force Z. HMS Nelson makes out to sea, followed by HMS Rodney and HMS Indomitable with destroyer and cruiser escort.

VII. Continuation of V. Posed shots of two Canadian soldiers on Hilary - one from West Nova Scotia Regiment and the other from the Lorne Scots. CUs of Rear-Admiral Vian with Captain Paget and Major-General Simmonds with his staff. Cut to scenes ashore where LST 301 disembarks vehicles onto the beach - LCPL(S) in foreground - a Bishop SPG is standing in as tractor and tows a Bedford OY past the camera - DUKW in background. Cut back to Hilary - a LCA passes close by - an Admiralty Type motor minesweeper conducts a sweep - in the distance is the monitor HMS Roberts with two LCI(L)s.

VIII. Continuation of VI. Sequence showing a smiling Vice-Admiral Willis with Captain J M Howson of his staff. LS of HMS Penelope and HMS Aurora of Force Q. LSs showing Force H in line astern - Nelson having come round to port followed by HMS Indomitable and HMS Euryalus and HMS Rodney - on the horizon is HMS Formidable and Warspite and Valiant. The line then disperses, the carriers steaming off to port and HMS Rodney to starboard. As the fleet closes up better views are obtained of HMS Indomitable and Rodney and then of the Valiant and Warspite.

IX. Final shots onboard "Hilary". Rear-Admiral Vian and Captain Hilary. Staff officers of 1st Canadian Division.

Force V - the headquarters ship Hilary with convoys KMS.18 and MKF.18 - lands the 1st Canadian Division on the west coast of the Pachino Peninsula. Support Force East bombards. Covering Force cruises out at sea.
