HMS BULWARK'S CREW RELAX WHILE THEIR SHIP LIES ANCHORED OFF FAMAGUSTA

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ADM 1670).

Synopsis

Film shot by HMS Bulwark's Entertainment Officer, showing some of the ways in which the ship's company amused themselves while anchored off Famagusta with no shore leave other than to a Rest Camp on the island - run by the Army.

Aerial shots of HMS Bulwark at sea, Sea Hawks and Venoms ranged forward, and the coast about Famagusta, ending at a tented encampment by the beach, where Bulwark's crew are to enjoy Rest and Recuperation. Scene onboard as a Lieutenant checks the permits of a group of swim-suited libertymen. LA as the party goes down the accommodation ladder into the boats which will take them ashore - a whaler towed by a motor-boat. Men relax on the beach - two men pass the camera, one supporting the other in the classic pose of drunkards. Men swim to a raft tethered in the shallows - Bulwark and a destroyer are visible anchored offshore. A boat brings more men from the carrier. Interior of the camp's pub - men drink and play darts. Interior of the clubroom - men read papers, play table football and billiards. Shots of souvenir and sporting hire shops. Men eat in the restaurant. Putting in the sand dunes. Tennis on a shady hard court. The scene shifts back to Bulwark, where men are diving from the lower decks and boom into the sea. A game of water polo follows. Flightdeck hockey and volleyball on one of the lowered lifts. Pistol shooting at targets set up on deck. The cameraman embarks with a small group of fishermen in one of the boats - a whaler and four dinghies are also being sailed about the ship. One of the fisherman 'catches' a large fish. One of the dinghies capsizes, but is righted by one of its crew standing on the keel. Water-skiers are towed about by a Whirlwind helicopter and, more conventionally, by a ship's boat.
