Synopsis

Memorial service at Westminster Abbey for the late Sir Michael Le Fanu, Admiral of the Fleet, with the Duke of Edinburgh, Lady Le Fanu and many other dignitaries attending. Includes a remembrance speech given by Admiral Sir Peter Hill Norton, who succeeded Sir Michael Le Fanu.

Her Majesty Elizabeth, the Queen Mother visiting Audacious class aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal to conduct the commissioning ceremony, following a major refit. She is welcomed by Captain Ray Ligo, presented to Commander Nicholas Hunt, and meets Leading Steward James Marshall, his wife Wendy and three month old baby Barry.

March 1970, Barrow, Cumbria. Mrs John Morris launches HMS Courageous, the sixth nuclear powered Fleet Submarine.

Audacious class aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal (R.09) leaves Plymouth a week after being commissioned, headed for sea trials with the Royal Navy's first Phantom jet fighters on board.

May 1970. The Duke of Edinburgh visits the Royal Navy Engineering College at Manadon, Plymouth, where he presents the Queen's sword to Lieutenant Joseph Ruston and takes a tour of the facilities.

Dennis Healey, Secretary for Defence, presents Corporal James Douglas of the Royal Marines with the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) trophy for inter-service sports, having been the third fastest British serviceman in the 1,500 yard finals.

Resolution class submarine, HMS Revenge at the Cape Kennedy test range to test fire a Polaris missile. Also footage ofHMS Scimitar (P.271) , the first Royal Navy Fast training Boat capable of speeds over forty knots.

HMS Bulldog and HMS Beagle, two of the Royal Navy's survey ships, are commissioned together at Chatham, Kent.

Entertainer Jimmy Saville hosts the "Miss Meet the Marines" beauty contest in 1970, held at the Royal Marines training centre in Lympstone, Devon, won by eighteen years old Lyndsey Davey from Weymouth.

A five feet long cake of Destroyer HMS London (D.16) is presented to the children's ward of Mile End Hospital in East London.

A group of schoolboys calling themselves the "Commando Unit" from Chinnor, Oxfordshire, who model themselves on the Royal Marines, are given a day out at the Royal Marines site in Poole, Dorset, where they assault a beach from landing craft and tackle the assault course.

October 1970. Premiere of the film "Tora! Tora! Tora!" in the London's West End, about the Japanese raid on Pearl Harbour, 7 December 1941. Celebrities and military dignitaries present include Vice Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Ashmore, Second Sea lord Admiral Lewis and comedian Ernie Wise. Also present is former Commander Mitsuo Fushida, who led the attack personally. Six sailors from HMS Dido (F.104) escort actress Jean Harrington, the sailors being Alan Stuart, George Peck, Graham Jeffries, Ken Dutton, Nick Pendlebury and Keith Clark.

Prince Charles visits Leander class frigate HMS Charybdis( F.75) , having announced his intention to join the Royal Navy. The Prince is greeted by Admiral Lewin on board the ship as it is docked in Fiji, where he meets his lookalike, Midshipman Helis, before attending the Fijian independence ceremony.

Gosport, October 1970. Commander in Chief of Naval Home Command, Admiral Horace Law, commissions HMS Centurion, an administrative building housing a 1 million computer that will keep the Royal Navy's records.

Prince Charles visits Bermuda as it celebrates 350 years of parliamentary government, where he is greeted by Lord Martonmere, Governor of Bermuda. Three sailors from Leander class frigate HMS Sirius (F.40) visit the Gibbs Hill lighthouse, being Junior Seaman Dave Christie, Able Seaman Len Carrington and Leading Seaman Eamon Paddon.

Joint Service Division trip to Elephant Island, Antarctica, including the expedition leader Commander Malcolm Burley, zoologist Christopher Burrs, surveyor Tony Rackam, mammal expert John Hunt and Chief Petty Officer Burkett.

Pakistan, following the flood disaster of November 1970. Heavy repair ship HMS Triumph, assault ship HMS Intrepid and supply ship HMS Sir Galahad are all present to help, as are the helicopters of 847 Naval Air Squadron. Commodore Derek Napper is in command of the relief effort.

Chinese chefs from HMS Albion (R.07) present a cake of St. Pauls Cathedral in Rome to the children in Great Ormond Street hospital, London.

Audacious class aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal (R.09) launches its first ever hot air balloon, crewed by Lieutenants Terry Adams and Howard draper, who are bound for Malta to collect and deliver the ships mail.
