MALTA CONVOY

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ADM 458).

Synopsis

I. Scenes onboard a L Class destroyer escorting the convoy. Shots showing armament - 4.7-inch guns and 3-inch and 4x2-pounder AA - all trained to starboard. Accompanying destroyers include a Tribal, another L Class, and a Type II Hunt. As cameraship steams at speed, the companion L Class and then the Hunt are in line astern.

II. Onboard a merchantman. Crewmen secure boat to davits - after bringing across the cameraman? Various LSs over the convoy steaming over a calm sea on a fine day. CU of crewman asleep upon a blanket spread on the deck. LA of Oerlikon on a raised bandstand on the focsle. LSs over convoy - the ships are steaming in columns, some of them making a great deal of smoke which hangs in the still air creating an impressive pall. Sunset at sea. LS of escorting destroyer. There is some distant air activity as the convoy passes Pantelleria (?). HMS Laforey and HMS Lookout (G.32) steam past. HA onto focsle of cameraship showing two Oerlikons on bandstands on either side, and MS aft down the starboard side - there is a UP projector mounted amidships. An Oerlikon gunner stands easy at his station. Sequence showing a game of 'deck cricket' - the ball is attached to a length of string so that it cannot be lost overboard. CU of Paramount cameraman Hardy seated on the deck reading, an Eyemo camera by his side. More cricket. LA of Hardy with camera on tripod. Ship's officers consult chart before entry into Malta. A flag signal is hoisted. The ship enters Grand Harbour - two Dido Class cruisers are at moorings with a Hunt Class destroyer escort and harbour craft alongside. Cameraship passes a merchantman unloading into a lighter and a moored Tribal Class destroyer (possibly HMS Tartar). Cameraship is taken under tow by paddle tug. MS of a sunken tanker resting on an even keel on the bottom of the harbour, its upper works and decks above the water line. Good MS of a Sea Hurricane Mk IA or 'Hurricat' carried in the bows of a catapult-equipped CAM ship which is making its way out of the harbour. Cameraship secures to a mooring buoy.

An uneventful convoy to Malta, the crew of a merchantman finding opportunity to relax.
