ASCENSION ISLAND SUPPLY BASE

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: ADM 4823).

Synopsis

Supply activities at Ascension Island prior to the arrival of the task force en route to the Falklands.

The reel opens with a Sea King taking off at the air base at Ascension Island Aerial, and aerial shots from a Sea King helicopter above ships underway at sea and the air base at Ascension. The reel continues with footage from the Ascension air base showing general activities - Wessex helicopters manoeuvring supplies, a partially dismantled Lynx helicopter, Hercules aircraft. The surrounding countryside is shown. A Nimrod aircraft lands. A naval vessel can be seen silhouetted in the distance. Activities continue into the night. A Hercules arrives and unloads.

Notes

Summary: footage was received with no documentation and little identification. Information is partly based on the recollections of DPR(N) cameraman Alan Fowler in 1993 (who probably did not shoot this reel), and otherwise on a brief viewing of the reel. A note on the original film can identifies this reel as "Initial arrivals and preparation work before arrival of Task Force - taken about 8 April". (See also note to ADM 4821).
