SCENES ON BOARD HMS OCEAN 2

Synopsis

I. Scenes on board HMS Ocean: individual aircraft run up engines; parked aircraft ranged on after deck; Fairey Firefly Mk 5 is towed aft by small tractor; CU as chockman frees Firefly NF.1 as engine starts up; CU diamond-and-square pilot signaller on bridge; Seafire 47 (takes off, the camera planning to follow). CU island and aircraft handling crane in background. Carrier lift: HA.MS as Firefly NF.1 is manoeuvred into position and struck below; MCU as mechanics on hangar deck level check Firefly - rudder has fouled lift well whilst descending; flight deck party remove injured man and run out hose to spray foam into the well, from whence emerges dense smoke. Aircraft reception: Supermarine Seafire, too far over to port (after a bad landing?), is directed to taxi to centre of deck; camera tracks towards safety barrier stretched across the deck. Firefly NF.1 alights - a second approaches but is waved off - other aircraft including three in formation, fly past to starboard. Miscellaneous shots: rainbow forms background to aircraft carrier's Jack and foremost dressing lines as ship enters Malta harbour. Naval pilot jumps into sea and inflates dinghy. MLS to attendant destroyer following in wake as aircraft carrier turns to starboard - destroyer comes hard about to close on starboard quarter.

II. Destroyer (HMS Battleaxe or HMS Broadsword filmed from second Weapon Class destroyer) fires broadside to starboard and manoeuvres with consort.
