Synopsis

Lord Louis Mountbatten, Supreme Allied Commander South East Asia (SACSEA), visits the recently built floating Bailey bridge over the River Chindwin at Kalewa, Burma, and inspects men of 11th East African Division.

Pan over the Chindwin to 'Grub Bridge', a 1150-ft floating Bailey pontoon bridge at Kalewa; a jeep drives past camera. The 'rhino' patches of 11th East African Division are much in evidence. A second jeep follows carrying Mountbatten and the divisional commander, Major-General Charles Fowkes. Close-up of pennants on Mountbatten's jeep, including Chinese, British (with the phoenix insignia of South East Asia Command) and American flags. Mountbatten meets British personnel of 11th East African Division. Inspecting African troops. Addressing troops. On the bridge. A Lee medium tank on the bridge. Mountbatten's jeep departs, saluted by an Indian military policeman wearing the badge of XXXIII Indian Corps. Mountbatten, at an airstrip, meets American airmen; diagonal stripes on an aircraft suggest 1st Air Commando Group, United States Army Air Forces. Wide shot with parked aircraft and men carrying a stretcher case. Mountbatten watches an aircraft depart. African troops carry a stretcher case (an African soldier) with close-up. Mountbatten boards an RAF L-5 Sentinel.
