RAMREE ISLAND: 2ND BATTALION GREEN HOWARDS AT DAMAGED TEMPLE AND INDIAN ENGINEER BRIDGE DIVERSION

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: FUB 81).

Synopsis

Following amphibious landings on Ramree Island, British troops arrive at a hillside temple at Tabai Ridge, and Indian Engineers construct a diversion to a damaged bridge for the use of tanks.

View of a very badly bomb- or shell-damaged temple at Tabai Ridge. Closer look at idols carved by arched entranceways. Japanese 37mm anti-tank gun with 67 and Lincolns Regimental Museum painted on the gunshield. View the guns split trail and elevation mechanism. Soldier of the Lincolns (presumably 1st Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment) operates the traverse handle. Patrol of 2nd Battalion Green Howards arriving with the rock temple in the background. British troops amongst the wreckage. Sitting in a shell crater, men of the Green Howards drink tea and smoke; a small cooking fire burns in the background. Bren gunner deepens his foxhole with an entrenching tool. Wide shot; men sitting on the ground with the temple in the background. A Grant tank passes Tabai Ridge on a dusty road on the way to an attack on Black Hill. Indian Engineers lay matting on a bridge diversion. Close-up of the bridge damaged by the retreating Japanese. A Grant tank, with a lot of spare track links on its forward hull, uses the matting diversion; infantry follow behind. More shots of tanks using the diversion.

Notes

Interesting shots of the temple, with the obvious destruction being suggestive of the war damage done to Burma more generally.

No film in the FUB series for FUB 82, but dopesheet description suggests JFU 36.
