MINE DETECTION NEAR ONDAW

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: FUB 84).

Synopsis

One mile from Ondaw, Burma, British sappers of the Royal Engineers clear mines and bulldoze a diversion near a demolished bridge.

Close-up of the command wire of a mine, and of it running along the ground. Demolished brick-built bridge; Royal Engineers probe the ground with bayonets. The ground is loose and sandy. Shot overlooking the site and the engineers. Royal Engineer operates a buldozer to make a bridge diversion. Close-up dozer blade. Bulldozer driving towards camera. More shots of the bulldozer at work.

Notes

Ondaw was occupied by 4th Brigade (2nd Division) without opposition on 24 January. The engineer unit is not identified, but the bulldozer is probably from 21st Field Park Company, Royal Engineers.

The cameraman's dopesheet describes, with a certain pithiness, that the 'Japs were playing hide and seek a hundred yards further along the road' as this film was being shot.

No film held under FUB 85, but the dopesheet suggest this film is the same as JFU 37.
