MODIFYING UNIVERSAL CARRIERS FOR RIVER CROSSING

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: FUB 94).

Synopsis

Somewhere in central Burma, troops of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) work to modify Universal carriers for river crossing.

An engineer removes a carrier's sprocket hub. Removing dust. Greasing the hub. Reassembling the hub. Welding an exhaust extension. Fabricating a framework for oil drums. Greasing. Fixing the frame for the oil drums. Oil drum in position. Close-up of the frame. Engineer with pipe in his mouth fixes another oil drum. Fixing in position. Taking the modified carrier for a drive. Driving into a pond or lake; the carrier sits rather low in the water. More shots show carriers apparently making good progress

Notes

A highly technical but instructive film, detailing well the work of a supporting arm was increasingly vital as the Burma campaign entered a more mobile phase of operations.

The cameraman's dopesheet does not specify a location or the unit which he was filming. However, previous films shot by Sergeant Hammond suggest he was attached to 2nd Division, in the Ondaw or Sagaing region.
