INDIAN NEWS PARADE NO 101 (16/2/1945)

Synopsis

I. "ROTARY SHOWS THE WAY TO BETTER UNDERSTANDING" Scenes of the Rotary International Cultural Exhibition in Bombay where "Nations and Empires beckoned for your attention". Czechoslovakia is represented, with her consul in attendance, as is Norway illustrating "Narvik...Tromso, where we sank the Tirpitz". Commentary also notes how Switzerland's consul "read aloud the story of how she built many peoples into one nation". Poland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and India were represented, the latter displaying art from the house of Sir Cowasji Jehangir. Mr Karanjia discusses the Ajanta frescoes with a serviceman.

II. "EXPERTS CONFER ON COMMUNICATIONS AND EDUCATION" Delegates meet to discuss India's railway reconstruction and war problems, among them the Chief of the MSM. Colonel Emerson of the Great Indian Peninsular Railway (GIPR) and other delegates listen to Sir Edward Benthall telling them about "a whole batch of new headaches the war's going to bring them". Sir Hugh Dow opens a meeting of the Education Board in Sind and "looks ahead to when Sind would have compulsory primary education" while Sir Jogendra Singh (a member of the Viceroy's Executive Council) "took an even wider view and spoke of a plan for all India".

III. "CEMENTING THE FUTURE" A poster in Virar, Bombay Province, depicts a scene of "what an Indian village will look like in the future" as representatives of the Concrete Association of India, Mr Kynnersley and Mr Collins show how they had "turned the clock forward some twenty years in Virar". Scenes of concrete silos for grain storage and concrete tracks for bullock carts show how Virar had "got out of the rut".

IV. "A MISSION TO BRITAIN AND A MISSION TO INDIA" A mission from Delhi, among them Lieutenant-General Loch and Sir Akbar Hydari, go to England "to find ways to help India carry her burden of war". Scenes of the two men arriving for departure and saying goodbye messages. An Afghan Military Mission in India witness "how the soldiers who are famous on the world's battle-fields are trained". Scenes of soldiers training in a slit trench, at the 'jungle school', at target practice and of Kamal Ram VC meeting General Oomarkhan to discuss training matters.
