Synopsis

I. ART IN INDUSTRIES - The important role which art plays in the modern industrial world was strikingly illustrated in the Third Art and Industries Exhibition recently held in Bombay. Sir Vithal Chandravarkar, in declaring the exhibition open, congratulated the sponsors upon their laudable enterprise. The standard attained at this exhibition was extremely high. The textile section with its beautiful designs of Saree borders attracted the largest number of entries and drew the fair sex. The topical touch was not waiting and may striking designs and compelling ideas were cleverly executed. Problems of the day greatly excited the imagination of the artists and the exhibits in the 'Grow More Food' section attracted a great deal of attention from the visitors. The organisers deserve commendation, for these exhibitions not only open a few field of creative artistic imagination, but also open a new field of employment.

II. TURKISH MISSION - An enthusiastic reception greets the Turkish Mission through its tour of India. In Calcutta the Premier of Bengal, Mr Fazlul Huq, welcoming the honoured guests, said "We look upon you with pride, when we think that you have exemplified in the progress Turkey has made what an oriental nation can do under proper auspices". The journalists of the city entertained the Turkish Mission to tea at the South Club. Calcutta showered numerous invitations on India's distinguished visitors. In Calcutta they saw ships in various stages of construction at the Naval Yards. At the Airport the mission witnessed formation flights of a squadron of Hurricane fighters. From Calcutta the mission proceeded to madras where prominent citizens headed by the Mayor, Mr C Thadulinga Mudaliar accorded a civic reception. At the Corporation Building the mission was entertained to a tea party, and among those invited was the distinguished political leader, Mr Rajagopalachariar. The cordial welcome extended to them everywhere in India and the hospitality they have received, is deeply appreciated by the members of the Turkish Journalists' Mission.

III. THE AGA KHAN'S BIRTHDAY - The birthday of His Highness the Aga Khan, the 48th descendant of Hazrat Ali and Imam of the Ismaili community, his heir major Prince Ali Khan and grandson Prince Karim was jointly celebrated with great rejoicing by Ismailis all over India. In Bombay - the centre of Ismailis - devotees and priests with their offerings march in procession to the Aga's Hall where Major Prince Ali Khan received the leaders of the community and accepted 'Khilat' on behalf of his father, His Highness the Aga Khan. Though it is the custom of the Ismailis to celebrate the birthday of their Imam every year, for the last two years these celebrations were suspended by the command of His Highness the Aga Khan. A soldier himself, having been on the Middle East Command and now with the Persia and Iraq Command, Prince Ali, addressing the huge congregation dwelt mainly on the significance and implications of the present war and its repercussions on the community, and urged them to unite and harness all their resources for the allied war for Freedom.

IV. HOLY MAN OF MUNGO PIR - Movietone brings you a story of a Holy Man with occult powers over beasts of nature. In these lonely ruins of Kabristhan of Mungo Pir, near Karachi, Nur Mohammad, a claimant of Mungo Pir's family lives a strange life with crocodiles! - hundreds of them - and some of them over 150 years old. Feeding them, listening to them, looking after them, Nur Mohammad almost lives with them and the crocodiles accept him as their friend and guardian. The fame of this Holy Man attracts many who come to offer morning and evening prayers with him - so we have one of the deadliest beasts a slave to the strange unexplainable power of this Holy Man.

VI. ECLIPSE STAKES - A record crowd witnessed the Eclipse Stakes, the blue Ribbon of the Indian Turf at the Mahalaxmi Race Course, Bombay. It was a great day for punters and also for Maharaja Gaekwad of Baroda whose stable triumphed both in the Indian Derby with princess Beautiful and in the Eclipse Stakes with golden fawn. Her Excellency the Marchioness of Linlithgow, the Governor of Bombay and Lady Lumley attended. The Governor's Cup event preceded the Indian Derby and the Eclipse Stakes, and this race proved one of the most exciting of the day. A furlong from home sir Homi Mehta's 'Yawar' moved up, and in a grand finish beat 'Vandyke' the favourite by the narrowest of margins. Lady Lumley presented the Governor's Cup to Sir Homi Mehta, and congratulated him on an excellent win. The Maharaja Gaekwad of Baroda's first win of the day with Britt up was India's First Indian Derby over one and a half miles. 'Princess Beautiful' proved too good for the Maharaja of Gwalior's 'Yeshwant' and two furlongs from home 'Princess Beautiful' drew clear of the field and won by three and a half lengths from 'Yeshwant'. Now for the racing classic of the year - the Eclipse Stakes - an expectant hush falls upon the 42,000 onlookers as 'Golden Fawn', winner of the 1942 Eclipse leads the field towards the starting post. Watch this race closely, and you will see the champion 'Golden Fawn' respond to Britt's call, and a furlong from home past 'ginger Boy' to win by one and a half lengths. 'Golden Fawn' - a great horse - wins a great race. Her Excellency the Marchioness of Linlithgow presented the trophy to the Maharaja Gaekwad of Baroda and congratulated His Highness, Mr Patel - the Trainer - and Edgar Britt - the jockey, on their record performance.
